Sasakawa Memorial Health Foundation provides grants to projects implemented by non-profit organizations based outside of Japan.

Funding Areas

Hansen's disease (HD)

Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs)

  • NTD Control (innovative field based programs only)

Palliative Care * (For Japan based Applicants Only)

Basic Considerations

Due weight will be given to proposals which contain at least one of the following:

  • Greater involvement of people affected by HD creating ownership of and strengthening partnership with the people
  • Pragmatic and realistic approaches to issues and problems considering diversified local environments
  • Potential for future development and self-sustainability
  • A diversity of gender, ethnicity, social class, cultures and societies

Applicant Eligibility

Applicants for Sasakawa Memorial Health Foundation's grants must be national and international non-profit organizations based outside of Japan. This includes educational and research institutions. The Foundation does not accept applications from, nor provide grants to, private individuals or for-profit organizations.

Proposal Eligibility

Sasakawa Memorial Health Foundation's grants support non-profitable and institutional initiatives. We do not accept proposals of the following nature:

  • Profit-making
  • Fundraising for general purposes
  • Debt repayment
  • Activities of a religious or political nature

Eligibility is not contingent on the amount requested. The Foundation generally accepts multiple-year project proposals spanning a period of less than three years, but they must undergo screening every year. In principle, indirect costs should not exceed 10% of direct costs. Resubmission of previously rejected proposals cannot be accepted.

When to Apply

Any application for the following year needs to be submitted by 31st August.
For the fiscal year 2012(April 2012 to March 2013), we kindly request your applications to reach us before 31st July 2011.

How to Apply

When applying for Sasakawa Memorial Health Foundation's grants, please send a set of following documents: 1) A cover letter, 2) a project proposal and 3) a project budget

2) The Project Proposal

Application form may be downloaded in either MS Word or Adobe Acrobat format. Application should not exceed 6 pages.

3) The project budget

Any format with summary and breakdown is acceptable. However, please note our project cycle (April-March every year).

*If available, attach the following additional information:

  • The most recent annual report or information about the organization
  • The most recent audited financial statements of the organization
  • The organization's current budget
  • A copy of official documents certifying the organization's legal and tax status
