SMHF recongnises the parasite control as one of the important public health issues in developing countries. The foundation has supported their related research and control in the countries such as the Philippines, China, the Central African Republic, and more recently in Cambodia and Timor-Leste. The foundation's supports to these countries is offered through regular and repeated field visits by the Japanese experts. This is particularly true in the case of schistosomiais. More recently the foundation has begun supporting a combined control programme of schistosomiasis, lymphatic filariasis, and intestinal parastic infections in corporation with the respective government health services joined with international agencies such as WHO and UNICEF and local NGOs. This combined programme is designed to contribute toward overall improvement of the health of infant and child population of the developing countries such as Cambodia and Timor-Leste.
